night. the president said that the same mitt romney didn't show up at the debate as showed up in the republican primaries. he was running away from his $5 trillion tax cut plan for millionaires and billionaires but we know the facts. the middle class and seniors would have to pay for the tax cut. he talked about replacing the affordable care act but he didn't say with what. he said he would cover people with pre-existing conditions. what he left out is if you have a pre-existing condition and aren't covered right now or between jobs, you're not going to be covered under mitt romney. we'll spend the next several days making clear what positions mitt romney misled the american people on. >> jennifer: so there is an opportunity there sure for that because mitt romney and we're cataloging these lies here inside "the war room" tonight as well to let everybody know. but there was at least a sense from the great supporters of president obama, there was a sense of deflation. it was good to see that the president was out

. for that reason and that reason alone, i think this debate is very important for mitt romney. >> can i pick -- >> and i think the debates -- i personally think debates are so great for candidates because they can talk without the filter of all of us saying what this means or what that means. and mitt romney, you know, you look at mitt romney, he's been portrayed as this 47% guy, and a lot of faux pases that he's made. this is his chance to talk to the american people straight. i remember 1980 -- and i bring this up to you, sam, because you weren't even born in 1980. >> i was not, yeah. >> but ronald reagan, people forget, before the debate, ronald reagan was painted as this looney, right-wing fanatic that would start world war iii, dr. strangelove, and it was the debate that stuck a needle in that balloon. >> i remember it well. >> not even born yet. i mean, this is romney's chance. >> sure. >> to connect with the american people. >> to pick up on mike's point, fascinating number from the poll is this. 51% of people who said they had heard or read something about romney in the last couple w

. two-thirds of debate watchers polled by cnn and orc believe that mitt romney bested the president. that is the biggest win of any presidential debater since we first started asking the questions of that back in 1984. check out this number. 82% said that mitt romney did better than they expected, but only 1 in 10 said he did worse. as for the president's performance, 6 in 10 say that he did worse than expected. just 2 in 10 said he actually did better. cnn's dana bash joins me now with more about the stats and the sound bites and to borrow a line from our friend and our colleague james carville, the president wanted a conversation, but mitt romney showed up with a chain saw. how are things going within the various xamps today and how is everybody breaking this down? the narrative today. >> the narrative today is simply that, you know, going into yesterday, there were republicans talking about maybe it's time to put resources towards getting the senate back in congress and, you know, some people leaving romney for political dead. that is not the narrative today. does the fact that m

that was the real mitt romney we saw at the debates. the confident asserttive romney we saw during the debate is not the romney we have grown used to over the last couple of months. romney has since stood by his 47% statement but now he is rolling it back. here is what he said yesterday. >> it's completely wrong. and i absolutely believe, however, that my life has shown they care about 100%. >> you might think that this new romney is nothing but an act. if you do, you are not alone. here is what the president had to say to a crowd of 30,000 people yesterday in madison, wisconsin. >> i met this very spirited fellow who claims to be mitt romney. but i know it couldn't have been mitt romney because the real mitt romney has been running around the country this past year promising $5 trillion tax cuts for the wealthiest americans. >> romney is rolling out new campaign ads as well as new talking points over the next few days and weeks. his goal is to convince the american public that he is ready to be president. more coming up live after the break. stay with us. matter. >> i woul

an advantage in the way the non-rules are in this debate tonight. and i also think that mitt romney has come off a series of really easy debates. we have to remember, mitt romney triumphed in a republican presidential field that was the worst republican presidential field in the history of the republican party. those are the debates he won. he was the one on the stage who did not look outright insane, compared to the rest of them. that isn't going to work for him tonight. he's going against the best debater mitt romney has ever been up against in his life. this is going to be, i think, a really great debate. >> preparing for this, i went back and looked at some of the 1994 debates between romney and kennedy, looking at some of that to see, you know, how does he deal with a democratic opponent? we've seen him debate a lot of republicans, but not a lot of democrats. and if it's half as fun as it was between him and ted kennedy, we are in for a very, very fun night ahead. lawrence, thank you for that, particularly on the rules. i think that was a really important point. we'll talk with you agai

has something to celebrate. in a cnn poll, 67% said romney won the first presidential debate. 25% think president obama was the victor. >> there were no real knockout punches thrown last night, more like a series of glancing blows with romney the aggressor on taxes, jobs, health care. putting the president really on the defensive. we're lucky to be joined by dana bash. >> i think you're right. it s a debate between a rusty president obama and a well rehearsed mitt romney. >> reporter: right out of the gate, it was clear, mitt romney came to play. >> the president has a view very similar to the view he had when he ran four years ago that a bigger government, spending more, taxing more, regulating more, if you will, trickle down government would work. >> reporter: president obama sounded a familiar alarm, warning of romney's been there, done that economics. >> the approach that governor romney is talking about is the same sales pitch made in 2001 and 2003. and we ended up with the slowest job growth in 50 years. >> reporter: but whether it was health care, jobs, or medicare, it was

that obama had a bad debate, didn't do what he was supposed to do but mr. romney lied. >> bill: you are absolutely right. again, i compared romney's debate performance to the ryan speech in tampa. it was a good performance but it was packed with lies. i think the entire media was focusing on stage craft and performance or entertainment or acting ability and not on the substance of what they said. on the substance of what he said mitt romney simply did not tell the truth about the $5 million, about health care, about a whole lot of stuff. kevin in chicago, kevin getting rid of big bird good idea? >> caller: yeah, my granddaughter is four years old, so i'm ul up to speed on big bird. and it brings back memories of when my kids were young. >> bill: same here. >> caller: it is just an example of the crap that comes out of his mouth. they don't realize the value of putting something on tv for the kids to watch -- >> bill: and learn, yeah. >> caller: and the whole industry that has spawned off of it of the kids toy, and everything -- >> bill: you got it. big bird is a
